What really hooked me on gaming was RPG games. I played them first on my trusty C64 and later Amiga 500. Calling computer RPG games for RPG games are probably stretching the definition quite a bit as most of them are rather rigid within their frame. However, I have spent more hours before the computer than I dare admit, but I have enjoyed most of it. When I review my list of favourites, I really give away my age. But, lately games hasn't been much fun. I feel I have tried it all more or less. I have even tried MMO's, but found them really one dimentional compared to pen and paper rpgs. The last few years has been more like a drug addict that looks for his next fix. I even wwent back to EVE briefly, despite what I wrote in my last commentary. I don't regret it, but it just confirmed my previous stance. MMO's are largely waste of time for my part.

For me MMO's are little more than glorified chat engines. Something that Second Life has developed to extremes. For computer games I prefer either single player or more competetive games like Red Orchestra and similar FPS games where you play against other humans. For many MMO are maybe a way of having some social interaction in a otherwise busy day. However, I prefer to get my social fix other ways. And when it comes to roleplaying games nothing beats sitting around a table rolling dices and bullshitting with likeminded souls. My wife things I am seriously loopy. I just nod and grin.

Just before Easter I went to the Uk to play with a fine bunch of Traveller addicts during the weekend. it was probably my most enjoyable weekend playing Traveller ever. As the Traveller community in Norway consist largely of me and my players there is very little in the way of having a local Traveller community. And I must not forget Jeremy, a fellow Norwegian that I met on Kings Cross Railway station. He is the only one outside my group I know play Traveller in Norway. There is probably more, but I can't find them easily.

At a time where I almost lost my inspiration for Traveller, the trip to UK and the TravellerCon 2010 revived my interest in the game and my desire to write more material. It also confirmed my suspicion that computer games more or less hampered my creativity as a writer. Not that I ever has been a great writer, but I prefer to have the little skill I have rather than none.

I'll end this article with my list of top ten computer games in no particular order:

  • Elite (c64)
  • Civilization (Amiga)
  • Secret of the Monkey Island (Amiga)
  • Half Life (PC)
  • X-com (PC)
  • Silent Service (c64)
  • Command Decision series (c64)
  • Pacific Air War (Amiga)
  • Mercenary (Novagen/C64)
  • ZORK (Various)

Stay tuned, I have articles planned that will be written, unless ther weather is too got to pass up. Summer is coming.

See you around the table.
