In 1097 The Imperial Marines called for designs from all the major robot developers in the Imperium. Their tasks was to design a robot that was going to fill the gap in the Marine deployments when it came to gathering tactical intelligence when operating under cover without the direct support of orbiting platforms. The main design criteria was light weight, cheap, easy to maintain. The competition was won by Volmend Automatons, a subsidiary of Ling Standard Products.

Although little heard about, mine fields in space can be a real hazard. The RCV Starfox have been buildt just for the task to handle mines in space. A task that are way too dangerous to handle directly by the living. Mines in the 56th century are just too smart and devious for the mortal. The Starfox was first commissioned in 840 to replace older models. Several minor improvements has been done since then.
